If that wasn’t the case then the aircraft would not be able to fly straight. No matter the speed, An airplane’s wing generates lift equal to its weight. Heavy passenger planes like the Airbus A380 needs high Angles to generate more lift and smaller Military jets requires less. They are crafted with a specific Angle of attack. Wings might look level, but they are not. The Angle of attack- the Angle with which the wing meets the oncoming air- is what makes it possible to deflect the air. So the faster you go the more air is deflected and the more lift is created. The job of the wings is to deflect the air down, thereby keeping the Airplane up. You can see it in the Joker smile trail left by the aircraft when it moves through clouds. A plane stays up in the air by pushing the air downwards. So how does a plane fly? To put it plainly. How a plane flies, the conditions needed for stable flight and how the Angle of attack comes into play. I didn’t understand the math behind it, but I understood the principles. The more I learned the more I realized I had to learn. The complex intricacies of Angle of attack, Aerofoil shape, Metacenter, Balance and weight distribution. The amount of engineering that goes into making an Aircraft. I understood why helicopters have a tail rotor and realized how my first helicopter design with a single motor and propeller had failed. I learned about power to weight ratio and was dismayed that all my previous attempts were based on wrong assumptions. I was the evil overlord then, torturing my motors until they died.Īs time went on my understanding of the laws of flight grew. I had burned out the bearing of many motors, they would come to a screeching halt like they are screaming in agony. To increase the power, I would add batteries in series. I knew it did not have the power to lift the battery. I would bootstrap designs, but none of them flew. And thus began my journey to take part every toy I had to find motors for my helicopter. I even got electrocuted, trying to plug the old cable into the socket. Hardly any lift at all, I was disappointed. I tried giving it a pull, measuring how much lift it produced and how much weight it needed to lose. It created a lot of wind but did not lift off like I expected it to. I put the assembly on the floor so that the blade faced downward. I took apart an old table fan and cleaned it and oiled it up to make it go fast, removed all the excess weight of the stand and was left with was the motor, the blade, and the cage. All I knew was I need a propeller spinning very fast to create lift. I remember the day when I set out to make my first helicopter, with my basic understanding of physics. I tried to learn as much as could about Aircrafts, most of it from watching Television. How does a machine that’s made of metal, float through the air like that? I wondered what it would be like to be in one of those machines effortlessly cutting its way across the sky. I will forever remember that day as the day I found my life long love. Then I realized how cool it was, to be a pilot. At first, what went through my mind, was fear. Get Free Job Alerts No, Im not interested. Thus, snowshoeing has started to become more recreational in nature.Īlthough snowshoeing as a recreational activity can be traced back to the late 19th century, it is in the mid- to late 20th century that we have seen a significant increase in this pastime. The invention of backcountry skis and significant design improvements over the past 35 years, however, have dramatically decreased a person’s need, and often his or her desire, to use snowshoes for practical travel in the backcountry. Historically, snowshoeing was a primarily utilitarian activity – that is, snowshoes provided an efficient means to get from A to B when the terrain between A and B was covered in deep snow. The world of snowshoeing seems to be undergoing rapid changes and shifts in focus. Ignorance is not bliss here – it can be deadly! Please read all the preliminary information presented in the next section before setting out. Read moreīefore setting out to enjoy some of the most wondrous scenery on this planet, it is important to be properly informed about snowshoes, snowshoeing and the environment you will be entering. Snowshoeing continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in North America. Should you find yourself on the cusp between sizes, always go with the smaller one and then simply add tails for added flotation as needed. The perfect resource for planning a quick snowshoeing adventure in the heart of Canada’s glittering Rocky Mountains. Now, with Modular Flotation tails available across all MSR adult snowshoes, we’ve made that easier than ever. The idea is to find the smallest possible snowshoe that matches your needs in most–not all–situations so you can maximize your agility and efficiency. Are you at a high altitude or very far north where snow generally falls deep and light and a larger snowshoe is in order, or are you at lower elevations or in a coastal range where snow has high moisture content and generally consolidates rapidly, making a smaller snowshoe your best choice? Then consider the snow conditions you’re likely to travel in most often-deep, untracked powder, or groomed trails and established snowshoe routes. If you only go on a couple of overnights a year, don’t include that 50-pound pack-just your fully clothed weight, plus a daypack and water. Once you’ve decided on a snowshoe, assess your weight, including all the gear and clothing you’ll be wearing the majority of the time you snowshoe. Since all MSR® snowshoes deliver exceptional traction, your next consideration is flotation, and this is where size comes into play. The primary purposes of a snowshoe are to provide flotation and traction.
