Logging onto ACORN Students use their UTORid and password to log onto ACORN ( This is similar to other U of T systems like Blackboard Portal or Degree Explorer. Any student(s) attempting such activity may be denied access to ACORN until after the relevant registration period. Such activity may clog the system so that other students may be denied access or experience degraded performance. Students are expected to be responsible when using the system and should not attempt to flood it with requests, or to automate the process of course enrolment. If, for extraordinary reasons, you are unable to use the system, contact your graduate unit as soon as possible. You normally will use ACORN to add or cancel courses. It also means that you agree to assume the obligation to pay academic and incidental fees according to the policies and requirements of the University of Toronto. Use of ACORN to enroll in courses means that you agree to abide by all of the academic and non-academic rules and regulations of the University, the School of Graduate Studies, and the graduate unit in which you are registered. It is also used by the University and various student groups to make important announcements and administer elections. Many courses use the portal to provide online materials, discussion groups, quizzes, and more. Your UTORid provides you access not only to your University email account but also to Blackboard, the University’s student portal and learning management system. New students are advised to validate their UTORid at the University Library early. That account may be forwarded to another personal account, but it is the University account to which the University will send official correspondence. Under University policy, students are required to maintain a University based email account (i.e., ending in utoronto.ca or ), record it in ROSI, and regularly check for messages. It is your responsibility to ensure that your email address, mailing/permanent address, and telephone numbers are up to date at all times. The Centre Comparative Literature and other university offices may send important information to you by email. Important Notes regarding Email and UTORid If questions arise about requirements, policies and procedures, students are responsible for seeking answers to these questions from staff and advisors. ACORN makes it easier for students to check and correct this information. While academic advisors, faculty, and staff are available to assist and advise, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to keep personal and academic information up to date at all times and to follow all University, SGS, departmental and program regulations, requirements and deadlines.

SO ADORABLE! This is the second cake in a series I’m working on with a new cookie cutter cake topper set from Sweet Sugarbelle. Like the next time your eating a purple people eater cake. AH HA! There it is, the people were purple wether the writer meant it to be that way or not!Īre you questioning my sanity yet? Hey, you never know when you’ll need this info. In the line “eating purple people and it sure is fine”. He has always been portrayed purple in movies and illustrations as well! However, the truth lies in the lyrics. And the truth is it was never set in stone what color monster he was, but the writer implied in conversation that the monster was purple. So many people responded to this fun little trivia I had to dig a little deeper. So I did a little polling on my Instagram story and turns out more then 70% of people thought he was purple. Have you ever thought about this? It’s really not clear! As I’m working on this cake this kinda boggled my brain and totally entertained me (yep it’s that easy). people-eater would have cleared things up. The lack of hyphen in the song’s lyrics leaves us unsure. Speaking of his being around awhile, did you know since the original song came out in 1958 people have questioned which was purple the people he eats or the monster. ( Not to be confused with the one-eyed green monster, Mike, he and his furry purple buddy are not the people eating type.) How can we not love him I mean he plays in rock and roll band! Him and his catchy tune has been around since before most of us, so it was time to celebrate him with his very own cake. When it comes to monsters there is only one one-eyed flying purple people eater, who we all totally love and adore despite his people eating tendencies. In developing its test, Curative, according to its founders, anticipated supply chain issues, so a process was created that didn’t rely on the same supplies other companies use, preventing a supply shortage and allowing the company to maintain its weekly production quota of 1 million tests. He said Curative has “captured up to 10% of the daily COVID-19 test samples across the United States” in its brief nine-month history. The company’s CEO, Fred Turner, is a 26-year-old, Oxford-educated science and technology prodigy who in September 2020 told the scientific trade journal Cell Systems that he dropped out of college to pursue his interests, and that he started and pivoted two biotechnology companies in the Silicon Valley prior to starting Curative. Meteoric riseįounded in the Silicon Valley’s Menlo Park in January 2020, Curative Inc. “That’s 92,000 people who otherwise might have not known, might have been spreading and might have seen this explode even more,” he said at a news conference on Jan. Mayor Eric Garcetti defended the city’s decision to continue working working with Curative, as its test has been able to detect positive results from 92,000 asymptomatic people, which, he said, would have otherwise gone undetected and further spread the virus. “Bottom line is that the current test works fine.”ĭespite concerns of accuracy, L.A. “It’s one of the most popular tests for a reason with over 10,000 sites across the country,” Klausner said in a phone interview Wednesday, Jan. While the warning reminds people to follow test instructions carefully and be observed, Klausner said, the FDA only authorizes the test, it does not regulate a physician’s or nurse’s practice. Jeffrey Klausner, Curative’s acting medical director, described the FDA notice about Curative’s test as “confusing” and did not provide any data to support its stance. Monahan also stressed that the FDA notice did “not raise any doubts about the accuracy of a positive test result,” and that the potential concern only relates to negative test results.ĭr. It is a problem for all coronavirus tests.” “This may happen more often when people are without symptoms of the coronavirus disease,” Monahan said in his memo. Test effectiveness praisedĬurative and its partners say the test is highly effective when administered according to label, as the FDA instructed in its public safety alert. On Jan.15, Curative launched its first company-run vaccination site at El Camino College in Torrance, and will soon open another test site in Palm Desert, a company spokesman said. While the alert ended the company’s partnerships with Los Angeles and Sonoma counties and Congress, Curative was undeterred, maintaining partnerships with 14 other states, cities and counties, and expanding its services to include COVID-19 vaccination. Additionally, the FDA asked that people taking the self-administered test be observed by a health-care worker. The test, which uses a technique known as polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, requires people to cough three times and use a cotton swab to rub along their gum line and tongue. 4 safety alert by the Food and Drug Administration pushed Curative into the national spotlight when it warned that the company’s test could produce false negative results if not properly administered. The Bird & the Rifle hinges on relationships with significant others, with community and with the self, the songs full of rich detail that paint emotional pictures, often without specifying the feelings in question. She likewise had a hand in Hunter Hayes’ plea for passion, “I Want Crazy,” and in RaeLynn’s gender celebration “God Made Girls.” She and her co-writers expressed jealousy with a literate sensibility in Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” and captured the pain of a dying flame in another LBT single, “Your Side of the Bed,” that nabbed a Grammy nomination. McKenna is, in fact, a master at exploring relationships. ?“I guess somebody could look at that art and think, ‘Is she making a statement about guns?’ When I think of that rifle, I think of that guy, and I don’t think of anything else but the metaphor that we attached to it and where it came from, which was the mom and the daughter from the punchline of joke. “I guess I’ve sort of blocked out the fact that I’m putting out this record with a big picture of a gun on it,” says McKenna. Its title track employs a firearm as symbolism in a challenged relationship - the man’s powerful, dangerous essence shuts down the woman’s freedom of self-expression - and it hints at the complexities of a hot-button issue. The Bird & the Rifle, a 10-song album that explores gritty life issues with an uncanny honesty, arrives at retail on July 29, the day after the Democratic National Convention comes to a close. McKenna has accidentally set herself up for a similar juxtaposition. “It was such a strange day for me because you wanted to celebrate, but it was such a heavy day for everybody.”Ĭountry Music Turns to God In Turbulent Social Period “We found out that ‘Humble and Kind’ was going to be No. 1 on the Sunday that we woke up to Orlando,” says songwriter Lori McKenna. You can see the inherent challenges here for climate action. Essentially, we are hardwired to not take action even when things are going poorly, rather than take action and accept responsibility for the outcomes. We propose that not only is this bias important for sheer survival but it might influence what children learn about their environments and might assist in childrens social-cognitive and social-emotional development. Omission bias: This is the hardest to understand but also the most pervasive of the four cognitive biases, and it affects virtually everyone. Section 3 is devoted to exploring the evolutionary and ontogenetic functions of the negativity bias. Present bias: You may recognize this as the “marshmallow test,” a seminal Stanford University study that looked at whether people would be willing to delay gratification of a small reward in order to get a bigger reward. Optimism bias: Hope is a uniquely human experience, and it stems from our cognitive bias that the best possible outcome is also the most likely one, even when all data clearly points to a low probability of that outcome. Imagine people from coast to coast tuning into a climate scientist at a national podium every day! Imagine the federal and provincial governments, standing with resolute purpose, calmly outlining sectors of the economy that are putting us at the most climate risk and then just shutting them down! Imagine the feeling of mass mobilization behind a common goal! For the sake of meeting the challenge of the climate emergency, we need to pay heed to the lessons of COVID-19 and apply them to climate policy.Ī couple of months into the COVID-19 crisis, you couldn’t scroll more than two inches on social media without another invite to a webinar talking about all the lessons for climate policy-making to be learned from the pandemic response. It’s not a criticism - it’s just the way our brains are wired. But the bigger lesson is that we aren’t actually very good at this. Common wisdom has it that the lesson of COVID-19 is that we are capable of marshalling a mass, evidence-driven response in an emergency. This guy doesn't know what is talking about. Rap, however, is a sub-genre of Hip Hop and an element of it, especially when practiced without the conventions and aesthetics of the parent genre. Hip Hop is both a culture and a genre of music. The banana is Rap, a sweet fruit used for desserts and snacks, while Hip Hop is the plantain, used for main meals and can be converted into a wider range of food options. Both come from the same family, and look similar, but are two completely different types of food crops and taste different even when prepared the same way. It has its place.īut, I like to use the analogy of the difference between a banana and a plantain. This is not to dismiss commercial output. For example, the conventions which artists such as De La Soul, producers like Pete Rock or BBoys like Crazy Legs follow are vastly different from those practiced by commercial examples. Even though this is mistakenly often described as Hip Hop and vice versa, Rap (music) exhibits multiple aesthetics, often at odds with its core elements, enough to make it appear unrecognizable from Hip Hop forms still being practiced. It is not enough to say Rap (music) is one element, or that Hip Hop is merely a cultural term, because fast forwarding decades on, you now have a sub-genre which follows and ascribes to different aesthetics, politics and conventions than that which is practiced by the rest of the culture. While culture is subject to flux and change, there is and has always been, a requirement to adherence to each element in context with the Fifth Element, so as to inform and establish authenticity. The Five Elements, Emceeing (Rapping when inculcated with the other elements), BBoying (and the cultures within that), DJing (and producing) and Graffiti (not stencilling such as made popular by artists such as Banksy) are all embellished by the Fifth Element: Knowledge of the culture, which subsumes the history, politics, aesthetics and conventions of the rest of the whole. This is a basic explanation, but will be lost on people who do not understand or do not participate in the culture. The problem is over the years (for different reasons), the two terms have become intermingled and newer/later listeners have been unable to distinguish between them, partly because of commercial definitions dictated by establishment labels seeking to package and market it to new audiences without understanding or deliberately misrepresenting the aesthetics of either, and partly because in earlier days and still to a lesser degree, the use of the term 'Rap' or 'Rap music' to legitimate proponents of the culture and music to describe it, creating confusion.Īs others have stated, KRS One and others such as Rakim, Chuck D, Guru, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, et al, have defined it thus: “Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you live.” I feel the author is still at an entry level of discourse on this subject.Īnon52831 is the closest to the truth in this piece.
